Bone Health Studies

Understanding the Best Strategy for Estrogen Administration to Optimize Bone Health in Young Women with Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

In collaboration with researchers at VCU, the UVA Department of Pediatrics seeks girls and young
women aged 14-30 with irregular or absent menstrual periods due to low weight or losing a lot of
weight or high levels of exercise to participate in a research study (IRB-HSR# 302682, PI: Madhusmita
Misra, MD, MPH). Loss of menstrual periods from low weight, weight loss, and/or high levels of exercise
is also called functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA). Girls and women with FHA are at risk for poor
bone health and fracture because of many reasons, including having low levels of estrogen. We want to
learn the best way to give two hormones, estrogen and progesterone, to improve bone health in girls
and young women with FHA.

Participation in the study lasts 1 year and includes 4 study visits. There is no cost to participate in the
study and compensation and travel expenses are provided.
